I Cleaned My Studio

J. C. Phillipps studio

I’m always interested in artists’ & writers’ creative spaces, aren’t you? (You clicked on the link so I imagine you are.) The first thing you should know about mine is that it is usually very messy.  Making things is a high priority for me, cleaning is a low priority.  But on this day a couple years ago, I needed to rearrange my studio space to make room for my computer desk.  So I had to take a whole wall of bookshelves out and make a bookshelf corner (top, right) in order to make room.  (The desk is where the photographer is standing here.)  Anyway – this is all to say, I have to do a deep clean.  And because my studio is always a train wreck, I took photographs.

(Above.) You see that I prefer an L shaped drawing desk layout.  The white drafting table tilts up so I can draw without straining my neck and back.  Along the back wall (top, left) you can see cubbies where I keep manuscripts, loose art, and reference magazines.

Here’s a view from the futon of me working at my drafting table.  It’s a little messier, a little closer to its usual look. This photo was taken before we got the kittens, so now picture at least one cat standing on my desk looking out the window, and that’s pretty close to correct.
